Claudia Grutke was born in Germany and migrated to New Zealand after completing a degree in Pharmacy at the University of Hamburg in 1996.
Even though a part of her always wanted to be an artist she chose a very grounded profession and stayed in healthcare for more than 20 years.
With many years spent in Christchurch, it took an earthquake to initiate change.
In 2013 Claudia moved from Christchurch to Raglan,
took up her paintbrush and spatula and started working in the studio to create abstract paintings small and large.
In her art, she is mainly self taught.
Claudia’s paintings are largely unplanned.
Images evolve as emotional reflections of her subject.
Painting is about the process;
Nature is a recurring theme.
Deconstructed landscapes are created using a variety of texture.
Moving from straight structures to organic brushstrokes, her style is evolving.
The painting process usually starts with a vague idea based on
a photo, feeling, conversation or memory.
There are no sketches, Claudia jumps right into the painting
and lets her intuition guide her through the process.
Paintings are finished when there is nothing more to add and the balance
With solid international interest, her art is collected worldwide.
Many paintings have found permanent homes not only in New Zealand but also in the United States, Canada, Australia, United Arab Emirates, Great Britain and in Europe.
