MARISE RARERE AT THE SHED

Ngati Ranginui / Pakeha

MFA, Master of Fine Art (Painting, Sculpture) RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia

BMA,  Bachelor of Media Arts, Waikato Polytechnic, Hamilton, Aotearoa ,New Zealand

Marise Rarere lives and works as a full time artist in Whale Bay, Whaingaroa, Raglan.

She makes work at home and from her small studio on Hills Road. At the moment her focus is Painting and Drawing.  Marise doesn’t hold to a particular style but rather responds with a combination of impulse and restraint.  For example some paintings and inkworks have an immediacy of gesture and some bold colour choices.  In contrast her fine line ‘Woven’ drawings have a restraint that is expressed with delicate, repetitive lines and are like quiet meditations.

After graduating from her art studies (Bachelor of Media Arts) in 1996 Marise went on to learn Maori weaving with tutor Rama Kete. During this time she was part of a weaving group Toi Aringa. Several years later she completed a Master of Fine Art through RMIT University; during this time she received an Arts Waikato Scholarship. Marise has taken part in group exhibitions and solo exhibitions.  Marise has always had a strong interest in crafts, including learning how to cast glass with Di Tocker and making a variety of pieces. In more recent years Marise has been enjoying making pottery mostly through Claire Wimmer based at Waitetuna.

Marise has shared studio space at Wabi Sabi studio and then followed on having a studio at Artists at Work Gallery with local artist Jane Galloway.  Now Marise has a small independent studio.
